One says the neighbours' trees make their house too dark, the others say the trees are a protective buffer, and now Nelson neighbours are at war over the trees growing between them.

Linda McKee is helping her daughter, whose house faces onto the private road of her neighbours in Golf Rd, Tahunanui. She said the shrubbery planted along that road shade the house to the point that it has become dark, depressing, and mouldy."I have talked to them, and they've trimmed the sides, but it still doesn't let the sun in at all," she said.

She said the neighbours told her she could have the trees cut, with their approval, at her cost. McKee said it was simply not feasible for her. "I'm in my sixties, I don't have the money for that," she said.

It is possible to take issues like this to court, but even if she won her case, the tree-trimming would be at her cost. McKee said she had "got angry" and cut down some branches, and her neighbours called the police for trespassing.

However, on the other side of the fence, reluctant representatives of the neighbouring subdivision Colin and Karen Appleton said they had done enough trimming, and were "totally fed up with it". They said McKee had trimmed the trees herself several times, and trespassed to do so.​

The Appletons said the trees were planted as a barrier to help reduce noise pollution from what they described as very loud music "at all hours", and to block the view of the property which Karen Appleton described as "an eyesore”.

"[McKee] is just making herself look silly," she said five men on the street spent about three hours thinning the branches. Colin said McKee was being unreasonable when she continued to ask for more trimming to be done. "She has told us to jump, and wants us to ask how high," he said.
