A generous shopper has helped struggling families by paying off a total of $20,400 worth of layby bills on Christmas presents for their children.

On Friday, a man named Charlie K walked into Toys 'R' Us in New Jersey with his son during a live broadcast and announced he's paying off all the layby orders in the store.

Charlie told KYW he hopes it'll ease the burden for some struggling families.

Charlie's generosity didn't end there, he had everyone in the store choose three toys to donate to Toys for Tots, a non-profit organisation that donates toys to kids in need.

Another shopper showed up to the store planning to pay full price for a big box of toys she set aside for the kids, only to find it had already been paid for.
