A bomb squad has exploded a suspicious package after commuters were evacuated from London's Angel tube station.

Police say the incident has now been stood down after they were forced to cordon off Upper Street in Islington, North London just after 6.28pm.

Panicked commuters could be seen being ushered out of Angel tube station as armed police blocked off the area, the Daily Mail reports.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard told MailOnline a controlled explosion had been carried out by bomb disposal experts and the incident had been stood down shortly afterwards.

A spokesman said: "We were dealing with a suspect package in Islington. A controlled explosion was carried out, and the incident was stood down at 7.34pm."

Rail passengers caught up in the incident took to Twitter to voice their concerns as some were trapped inside the station. One person wrote: "Currently trapped at Angel Station. Don't know what's happening. Train is not stopping. There's an incident outside."

Witnesses described seeing emergency services 'everywhere' outside of the entrance after it was evacuated.

This is the third alert at a London tube station in less than a week. On Saturday night, Old Street tube station was evacuated after a man was reportedly behaving "erratically".

While on Monday hundreds of commuters were late to work after a tube leaving Wimbledon station in south London was forced to stop on the tracks.
