On October 7, 2025, the 20th Show Me Shorts International Film Festival was grandly inaugurated in New Zealand. This year marks the first time that China has served as Guest of Honour Country.
At the opening ceremony, Gina Dellabarca, the chairperson of the Showcase Film Festiva announced:
“Show Me Shorts is New Zealand’s leading international short‐film festival, aiming to showcase the most creative and thought-provoking short films from around the globe.”
As the festival celebrates its 20th anniversary, Mr. Wang Jianwen, Director of the China Cultural Center in Auckland, remarked in his address:
“Short films represent among the most expressive and experimental forms of cinematic language. In recent years, Chinese short-film creation has developed rapidly. We hope that through this international platform, the world can better understand the reflections and artistic voices of China’s younger directors, and at the same time promote cultural exchange and emotional resonance between China and New Zealand.”
From a global pool of 83 selected works, the festival has chosen eight new films by Chinese (or Chinese-language) directors for inclusion, and established a dedicated “China Focus” screening program.

China’s young director-writer Liu Hanlin’s original comedy short film “Representative, Please (Zhuan Ren Gong)” has been selected for this year’s festival, and he was invited to speak at the film festival’s global premiere on Auckland Opening Night. In his remarks, Liu Hanlin not only briefly introduced the film’s creative intention and background, but also emphasized that when literary works combine with cinematic art, they can amplify the influence of the work, enabling the film to serve a dual function of entertainment and addressing social issues.
“Using storytelling to resolve social issues” is a consistent principle for Liu Hanlin. As a young but experienced public welfare advocate, he is adept at creating literary and cinematic works from a “problem-solving” perspective. The creative inspiration for Zhuan Ren Gong stems from exactly this approach. Liu Hanlin believes that when literary works carry a public welfare attribute, they gain warmth and power; when cinema tackles socially pressing topics, it can more directly reflect current realities and inspire positive social energy. He further noted that since this year marks the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema, a “public welfare genre film” is not just a film with a philanthropic theme, but a mode of filmmaking that can mobilize social participation, produce real-world impact, and retain aesthetic value. Through adapting true stories, integrating social resources, embedding public welfare participation mechanisms, and expanding into secondary commercial releases, the aim is to build a sustainable ecosystem for public welfare cinema. He commented:
“In Zhuan Ren Gong, we have made a beneficial experiment in content production and public welfare film production, and we have already received many positive responses — it is truly encouraging.”

At the festival’s opening night world premiere, more than 700 audience members from different countries gathered at The Civic, a historic theatre in Auckland with over 140 years of history.
During the screening of the comedy short film Representative, Please (Zhuan Ren Gong), the sharp script written by Liu Hanlin, his precise direction, and the film’s ironically humorous original score and sound design came together to evoke both laughter and empathy. With the lead actor’s deadpan portrayal of helplessness and resignation, the film struck a powerful emotional chord.
Audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds responded with constant laughter, enjoying what many described as a truly “fun and thought-provoking” film. As an experimental public welfare–themed genre film, Representative, Please achieved remarkable success, creating a genuine cross-cultural emotional connection with the 700-plus viewers present.
Following the screening, enthusiastic audience members surrounded Liu Hanlin to express their resonance with the social issues reflected in the film — and their anticipation for his next work.

During this trip to New Zealand, Chinese young writer, director, and screenwriter Liu Hanlin expressed his heartfelt gratitude in his opening-night speech — thanking Show Me Shorts and everyone present for watching his experimental public welfare–themed genre film.
He explained that Representative, Please (Zhuan Ren Gong) explores what we do when we encounter moments of anger, frustration, or helplessness — how we reach out for help — and, in this era of rapidly advancing technology, how we strive to find balance between ourselves and technology, and between ourselves and the world.
At the “China Focus” special screening and discussion held on October 8, young Chinese producer Liu Xiaochen shared that the main creative members behind the film were professional volunteers from one of China’s most renowned public welfare organizations.
She explained that their purpose in making films is to use the expressive power and unique influence of cinema to help address real social issues. As a producer, Liu is actively exploring ways to integrate filmmaking with the public good, aiming to convey the creative philosophy of “letting life inspire life” through the impact of cinematic art.
She also noted that the team is experimenting with a public welfare–driven closed-loop production model, and that this film represents their first attempt at developing a public welfare genre film.
Young Chinese actor Ma Yuming shared that the team experienced several moments of near “breakdown” during the making of the film. The story itself was drawn from real-life struggles, and Ma noted, “The situations shown in the film are ones I’ve personally experienced. It was overwhelming — both in life and during filming. The shooting space was extremely tight; there was hardly any room for the camera or lighting setup. We all had to find creative ways to make it work, trying again and again. I performed the same scene repeatedly — but in the end, it was all worth it. As the director said, as long as we keep communicating and helping one another, miracles will happen.”
Liu Hanlin once again articulated his clear creative vision, expressing his desire to continue exploring the intersection of literature and cinema — bridging cross-media artistic expression with real-world reflection. Through works with spiritual and philosophical depth, he seeks to examine themes such as existentialism, free will, moral boundaries, and the value of life, while building a sustainable “public welfare genre film” model — one that combines social problem-solving orientation, artistic impact, and industry development potential.
It is reported that Liu’s short film Lament, adapted from his original novel The Recollection of China, was recently selected for the One Shot International Film Festival, which celebrates single-take storytelling. The film also follows a public-welfare production model, focusing on the meaning of life.
Meanwhile, Liu’s original science fiction novel 2085 has been adapted into a feature-film screenplay and has entered the preparatory stage of production. Blending realism and speculative sci-fi, 2085 tells a story of mutual redemption between humans and technology of the AI era. Told from the perspective of the post-2000 generation, the film reflects on the future of AI-assisted mental health care, medical support, social connection, and the evolving ecosystem of robotic services essential to everyday life.
